BTMA Response to DEFRA’s Digital Waste Tracking Update

The British Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (BTMA) acknowledges the recent announcement from DEFRA and the devolved administrations regarding the delay in implementing mandatory Digital Waste Tracking until at least April 2026. While this extension applies to multiple waste streams, it holds particular significance for the tyre industry.

What is Digital Waste Tracking?

Digital Waste Tracking is a potential key component of a full Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme. By centralising the collection, movement, and processing of waste data, it aims to improve visibility, support compliance, and create efficiencies across various industries, including the tyre sector.

Impact on the Tyre Industry

Currently, the UK tyre industry generates approximately 600,000 tonnes of waste tyres annually. However, the sector relies on incomplete published data and member-reported figures to calculate the mass balance. The implementation of Digital Waste Tracking will transform how the industry monitors waste flows, offering “Data-Driven Decision Making” capabilities. This will enable businesses to:

  • Identify trends in tyre waste disposal and recovery.
  • Pinpoint inefficiencies in waste management processes.
  • Unlock opportunities for innovation and circular economy strategies.

While the delay provides additional time for testing and development, the BTMA remains committed to preparing the tyre industry for this transition. Over the next 12 months, we will continue to engage with stakeholders, monitor progress, and share relevant updates to ensure our sector is fully equipped for the implementation of Digital Waste Tracking.

We encourage industry members to stay informed and participate in discussions shaping this critical initiative. The BTMA will provide regular updates as further details emerge from government consultations.
